Dynamic and Functional Structure

Dynamic and Functional Structure Kinesiology (DFS) is a course designed for people who want to work with physical wellness, performance, rehabilitation and recovery with an
integrative mind-body approach. It combines aspects of holistic kinesiology, sports medicine, chiropractic theory, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Its focus is to:
-manage pain
-rehabilitate injuries
-improve physical performance
-unlock impediments to people feeling well
moving freely.
Dynamic and Functional structure involves a unique collaboration between experts in chiropractic, sports kinesiology, occupational therapy, nutrition, naturopathy, acupuncture and holistic kinesiology.
DFS comprises the following major areas:- Assessment and treatment of physical conditions
limb assessments, joint problems, palpation, proprioception, detailed orthopeadic assessments;
- Neurological treatment of pain;
- Psychology of pain, pain medication and drugs, addiction to drugs, pain management;
- Rehabilitation and recovery;
- Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupressure, channel theory, tongue and pulse diagnosis and organ theory;
- Nutrition and diet therapy;
- Counselling and transpersonal methods of facilitating growth and change;
- Movement and primitive reflex therapy, neurophysiological assessment and corrections to improve brain function and learning difficulties;
- Kinesiology and muscle testing, including many techniques from chiropractic kinesiology and five other forms of kinesiology;
- Structural kinesiology, including orthopaedic assessment of the pelvis, integrated protocols for dealing with postural deviations;
- A clinically focussed third year (Advanced Diploma) that covers all major clinical areas including neurological disorders, immune disorders, mental health, psychological development, metabolic disorders, structural disorders, fertility, connection to spirit, sleep, anxiety and depression.
DFS is one of the course options for students studying the Certificate IV or Diploma in Kinesiology.
Graduates are able to continue on and gain an Advanced Diploma of Health Sciences and study towards a Degree in Complementary Medicine through Charles Sturt University.Specialist ModulesDynamic and Functional Structure (DFS) course shares many common modules with Holistic Kinesiology.
In the
Certificate IV in Kinesiology qualification the DFS students will study
one specialised module:
Assessment and treatment of physical conditions 1: Theories of acute versus chronic injury, specific limb joint
assessments, assessment of swelling, open wounds, palpation skills to determine injury, palpation treatments, compression
treatment, hot and cold treatments, proprioception and joint problems.
In the Diploma of Kinesiology DFS students study four specialist modules:
Neurology of pain: Painpathways, and how to balance pain neurologically
Psychology of pain: Pain medication and drugs, addiction
to drugs, management of pain theories and practice, pain assessment using
existing standardized tests
Assessment and treatment of physical conditions 2: Static and dynamic postures; functional versus structural problems and their interactions in the body; detailed pelvis, lumbar, cervical, thoracic and hips orthopeadic assessments and treatment; respiratory assessment and treatment, spine segment balancing
Rehabilitation and recovery: Rehabilitation theory and planning, motor learning, stroke, brain and head injury; motivational principles and practices.
