What is Transpersonal Counselling?

grounds.jpgTranspersonal Counselling focuses on self-realisation, dealing less with curing and more with healing. Curing without healing is a triumph; healing which may entail curing is a necessity.

Transpersonal Counselling looks beyond the personality self.

The mind and body is more than just an extremely complex machine. We are also spiritual beings learning from life, searching for meaning in birth, death, and all that precedes and follows our life cycle.

Our sense of self and the world we inhabit is determined by our states of consciousness. For example, in our normal awakened state, we perceive the world through our limited senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch. Impressions from these senses (with the exception of smell) are modified by our subconscious brain before they are processed by our conscious mind. What we see and perceive depends greatly on our pre-established belief systems and prior associations.

When dreaming we are open to a very different view of the world, not limited by our senses or prior programming. There are other states of consciousness that can be used to broaden our awareness of self and the world.

The psycho-spiritual traditions of the world's cultures offer us the potential for new models of health and wellbeing. Comparative studies of spiritual and religious systems and transpersonal anthropology are an important part of the program.

What our students say about Transpersonal Counselling

Margi Cartisano.jpg"In 2004 I embarked on a different kind of journey, studying transpersonal counselling through IKON in Sydney. It was confronting and revealing, but most of all deeply connecting. The process was creative and helped me understand my masks, my gifts and gave me insights that helped me connect to my inner spirit and wisdom.

As a result I have had tremendous growth and life changing experiences. The journey has helped me grow as a human being and has given me a deeper appreciation of the cycle of life and its role in transformation. The course provided the right space for me to learn new skills, and access different parts of myself. I am now working back in the community with support groups and meeting people at where they are in their life.

I have to acknowledge the skills and support of a great bunch of gifted lecturers and to our tutor Vicki Dean for her encouragement and support and keeping us grounded. I will always be eternally grateful to this special group of people."
